What is Subarachnoid Hemorrhage?

by Admin1122

What is Subarachnoid Hemorrhage? Neurosurgeon Dr Arun L Naik explains in this video. Causes of Subarachnoid hemorrhage are aneurysm, trauma and AV Malformation in the brain. Symptoms of subarachnoid hemorrhage are headache, vomiting and coma. Signs of subarachnoid hemorrhage are paralysis and blindness. Causes of subarachnoid hemorrhage are aneurysm and AVMs. Treatment of subarachnoid hemorrhage is done in the ICU. subarachnoid hemorrhage is a brain stroke.
subarachnoid hemorrhage is bleeding from a ruptured brain artery at the depth of the brain. This leads to more pressure inside the brain causing  interfere with the brain function.
What causes a SAH
Commonest is due to a brain injury after a trauma. Second cause is bleeding from an aneurysm on the brain artery. Aneurysm is a balloon like swelling in the wall of the artery which eventually ruptures. Third cause is bleeding from a brains birth defect called an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) which is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in the brain.
What are the symptoms of subarachnoid hemorrhage
This bleeding often causes a sudden, severe headache. Patients say the pain is the worst type of pain suffered in their life.  Often the headache spreads to the neck causing neck stiffness. Some patients have a convulsion or a seizure. Subarachnoid hemorrhage is a severe type of hemorrhagic stroke. It can cause permanent brain damage. In fact, an undiagnosed brain aneurysm rupture causing SAH is one of the causes of sudden death.
How to Diagnose?

Cerebral angiography or a DSA test. This is an angiogram test similar to your heart angiogram test.
Treatment
We treat all these patients in our ICUs. Patients may be put on life support.  Blood pressure must be kept in an acceptable range. Once the condition improves, we quickly have to deal with the aneurysm so that it will not bleed again. There are two options to treat an aneurysm. One is angioplasty the other is a brain surgery.  Angioplasty or Endovascular coiling is a less invasive procedure. Second option is a brain surgery.  Here I place a small metal clip across the base of the aneurysm to block it. This is called clipping procedure.
There are some complications of the subarachnoid hemorrhage. Most severe is cerebral vasospasm or narrowing of brain arteries.
Some studies have shown that Smoking increases the risk of forming an aneurysm, so avoiding smoking may prevent some cases of aneurysm formation.
High BP: another risk factor for aneurysm formation is uncontrolled hypertension. So proper control of blood pressure will avoid aneurysm formation and subsequent hemorrhage.
