Portal hypertension is when the blood pressure in the portal vein, which carries blood from the digestive organs to the liver, becomes abnormally high. It often happens due to liver diseases like cirrhosis, where scarring blocks blood flow through the liver, causing pressure to build up. It can also occur due to blood clots or other obstructions in the portal vein.
The approach to managing portal hypertension focuses on treating the underlying cause, reducing complications, and improving quality of life. Medications like beta-blockers can lower blood pressure in the veins, and procedures such as banding or shunting may be used to manage variceal bleeding.
