Description: A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, leading to bleeding within or around brain tissue. This type of stroke is less common than ischemic strokes but tends to be more severe. The bleeding increases pressure on surrounding brain tissue, causing swelling and damage to brain cells. Hemorrhagic strokes are primarily divided into two types:
1. Intracerebral Hemorrhage: This is the most common type, where an artery inside the brain bursts, usually due to high blood pressure or damage to blood vessels.
2. Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: This occurs when there is bleeding in the area between the brain and the thin tissues covering it, often due to the rupture of an aneurysm.
Symptoms may include a sudden, severe headache, nausea, vomiting, weakness or numbness, seizures, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Risk factors include high blood pressure, aneurysms, blood vessel abnormalities, trauma, blood-thinning medications, and lifestyle factors like smoking and heavy alcohol use. Treatment focuses on stopping the bleeding, relieving pressure on the brain, and managing symptoms.
