Become a BASS Ambassador and Make a Difference in Black & South Asian Communities

by Admin1122

Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability in the UK, striking every five minutes. However, Black and South Asian people face a significantly higher risk, often experiencing strokes at a younger age than White populations.

Despite these alarming statistics, many people within these communities are unaware of their risk, struggle to recognise the symptoms, or do not access the support available to them.

At Different Strokes, we are working to change that. We are launching the BASS Ambassador Program, a new volunteer initiative for stroke survivors from Black and South Asian backgrounds.

This program will empower survivors to raise awareness, break down stigma, and improve access to support in their own communities.

What is the BASS Ambassador Role?

The BASS Ambassador Program is a volunteer initiative for stroke survivors and their families from Black and South Asian backgrounds who want to use their personal experiences to support their communities. As an ambassador, you will play a key role in ensuring that more people understand their stroke risk, recognise symptoms, and take action when needed.

Each ambassador will have the opportunity to engage with local communities, faith groups, and public spaces to spread awareness. This could include giving talks at churches, mosques, temples, and community centers, speaking to religious and community leaders, or distributing leaflets at GP surgeries, hospitals, and schools. Ambassadors will also have the chance to connect with local media, take part in awareness campaigns, and signpost stroke survivors to available support.

We understand that not everyone is comfortable with public speaking, and this role is flexible. Some ambassadors may prefer one-on-one conversations, while others may wish to participate in research or provide support behind the scenes to support awareness initiatives. Every contribution makes a difference.

What Support Will Be Provided?

We will provide all training, resources, and ongoing support needed to help ambassadors feel confident in their role. This includes an initial half-day induction, access to multilingual stroke awareness materials, and guidance on how to engage with different community spaces. Ambassadors will also have regular check-ins with the team to share experiences and receive any additional support they need.

This is a flexible, voluntary role, and ambassadors can dedicate as much or as little time as they are able. Whether you can give a few hours a month or want to be actively involved in multiple initiatives, your contribution will be valuable in ensuring that more Black and South Asian people recognise the signs of stroke and get the support they need.
